Client Spotlight on Becky Hunter-Kelm, Copywriter

part 1: BECKY’S VALUE-DRIVEN BUSINESS & LIFE

part 2: BECKY’S Coaching Journey with Maika

Focus on Becky Hunter-Kelm

What inspired you to become a copywriter?

I’ve always been a writer but I was living in a sixth floor flat with three young children during the pandemic when a friend introduced me to Sara. Sara had started her own copywriting agency and was living my dream- writing copy and content to help entrepreneurs get in front of the right audience, help people live better lives… and make an abundant income.

Sara and Becky

Sara offered to mentor me into my new copywriting career and the rest, as they say, is history. I LOVED it.

After freelancing for a couple of years for a whole variety of clients, I decided to go all in and start my business officially, which is when I signed up for Maika’s IBI.

Slowly I niched down on who I serve: I come alongside coaches, entrepreneurs, and business owners who want to change the world, and I help them to do that, one powerful sentence at a time, through sales pages, social media copy, web copy, bios and blogs.

I have built www.beckythecopywriter.com and started attracting aligned clients to work with. I’m learning a lot and growing all the time.

What’s the most challenging part of running your own business?

Balancing enjoying my freedom from running my own business with staying focused on my goals.

For me, variety is the spice of life, and so I have learned the hard way to say ‘no’ to projects that aren’t a good fit—and say ‘no’ in general so I can prioritize my business—so that then I can say ‘yes’ to helping others when I want to.

How are you overcoming this challenge?

Maika has a Review and Planning module in IBI (Focused & Flowing) that helps you plan your week so that you focus on your goals and move the needle towards them every single day.

It's all about being intentional with your time, energy, and focus—Maika embodies this so well, and I am trying to learn!

What’s the most rewarding part of being a business owner?

I get goosebumps when my copy gets results—more clients, purchases, bookings—because that's the goal! I also get goosebumps when a client is overjoyed with how a piece of copy reads—so many times, they are shocked that it sounds just like them to a tee—I think this is my superpower, hehe!

What is one thing you wish you had known or been told?

Get support! Launching a business is not easy, so having some sort of coach is vital so you can get moving more quickly than you would on your own.

Cuddling the camp cat ‘üzüm’ which means grape because he was all scrunched up like a raisin when he was pulled from the earthquake rubble.

You are a mom of three young boys, a wife; you volunteer regularly in Hatay to support the earthquake victims, you run your business, and you serve your clients. How do you juggle all your roles and make time for everything?

Well, I believe in seasons.

Last year, I was in Hatay every other month or so, which, of course, did impact my business- and that's okay. I am getting my equilibrium back this year and will visit a little less frequently.

It’s going to be a different season. Also, it's cliche, but I needed a village! I’m not superwoman- no one is! I had amazing friends who would help with the kids, and I also had my old nanny, who would step in occasionally.

Can you take and share a snapshot of yourself now?

BECKY ’s Favorites of the Moment

I do love Friends for good laughs. (I have to stick to lighthearted shows!) Right now, I’m enjoying Young Sheldon!

I just finished ‘Third Culture Kids, a Gift to Care For’ by Ulrika Sandvik. It's an invaluable resource about supporting your TCKs as they grow up outside their passport country.

My ideal breakfast: A brunch-style eggs & avocado on toast.

My ideal start to a day is; slow wake up, coffee, and read in bed, followed by a big slow Turkish breakfast with friends!

Becky’s Coaching Journey with Maika

What have you achieved since you started working with Maika?

I started working with the very talented business coach Maika Endo on her 12-month Intentional Business Immersion Course at the beginning of 2023, and I have learned so much!

Highlights include:

  • Launching my new website www.beckythecopywriter.com

  • Created my offer suite and pricing by conducting market research

  • Learning how to create a content calendar instead of just winging it (I still love winging it sometimes, though)

  • Upping my SEO skills (I confess: the thought of SEO was simply terrifying up until now)

  • Learning how to write monthly newsletters to my subscribers (and building a list!)

  • Learning what it means to build a business based on MY values

  • Working with a new dream retainer client writing her blogs and newsletters

  • Launched my lead magnet in just 10 hours by breaking it down a few hours a week (thanks to your templates!). It inspired me to make another freebie and I think I could do it a lot quicker now!

As you are going through the IBI program, how did having this kind of support and community change things for you?

It greatly boosted my confidence, knowing I had an experienced business coach and a community of entrepreneurs with whom to share my challenges and learn.

The modules are so in-depth yet digestible, and the templates have shaved hours off my life, haha!

What do you enjoy most about your experience working with Maika and being in the program?

It's special that Maika and I live in the same city so that it's possible to have face-to-face meetups occasionally.

I don’t take that for granted as being both an ex-pat and business owner can be lonely.

It was also amazing that I got to serve two members of IBI with copy- two fun aligned projects writing blogs, LinkedIn bios and sales pages! I loved it.

What would you say to those still considering joining the IBI program?

Definitely do it. You get all the benefits of an experienced coach but none of the hassle-culture (or the ridiculously expensive price tag!).

The community is amazing, and you can slot in around your working life, family, and everything else you have going on.
